Squeaks Mobile Dog Run is excited to help provide some much-needed dog enrichment to the Seattle Humane Society. As a new business, we have decided from the onset that we should give back to our community where we can. Quality of Life is very important to us, to providing our clients and their families. As a mobile dog gym, we exercise in a unique, fun, dry and safe environment. We utilize slat-mill treadmills, which are non-motorized and let dogs do their thing. If we can help provide a little quality of life for some dogs in shelters, that’s what Squeaks Mobile Dog Run will do!
Slat-mill treadmills are perfect for a dog to get some exercise. Each dog has a different learning curve on these treadmills, and we help guide dogs through this process with encouragement, toys and for those dogs who are only treat motivated, treats. Food is our last resort, and we prefer to use it as a reward. There are some dogs that those treats are ever so important to, dogs at shelters. These dogs have been through so much, some shipped to shelters from Florida recently after their families’ homes were lost to hurricane Ian.
Let’s think about one such dog we got to meet. Oberon recently lost his home, his family and his life has been turned upside down. He was in a Shelter in Florida but got lucky and was shipped to the Seattle Humane Society. He was put in a kennel, which was put in a van and driven 3000 miles. He is now living in a kennel and gets about 1-hour per day outside his kennel. He is lucky to be at the zero-kill shelter but must wait for his forever home.
Squeaks Mobile Dog Run is happy to provide some simple exercise with our mobile dog gym for Oberon and his new friends. We brought the toys and treadmills, the staff brings the hotdogs and a cheerleading section. Oberon was very cautious at first, potentially scared of the van itself. He took his time, feeling things out for a few minutes and then slowly, one paw moved forward, then the next. After about 10 cautious minutes Oberon began to be more loose, more free. He was happy, smiling, wagging that tail, he started to trot and even a little more of a burst. Oberon was simply being a dog almost frolicking and playing with us chasing that toy or hotdog. His tongue hanging low, he was in his zone.
We bring the fun to the run, well maybe it is just a walk, or a trot, but for a few moments Oberon remembers what his life was like. He has lots of love right now, the staff the volunteers at the Seattle Humane Society are amazing and are looking out for his best interests every moment of the day. He is cared for while he is waiting for his forever home.
